War Memorial decorated to mark anniversary of First World War

Visitors and residents alike remarked on the way that the parish's war memorial was enhanced to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War - one of a series of thoughtful events being held in the community.

The war memorial lists the names of 38 men who gave their lives during the conflict alongside eight from the Second World War. Each one represents a life cut short and a bereaved family.

The 'Roll of Honour' displayed in the village hall lists almost two hundred men from the parish who took part in the First World War.

The Buriton Village Association is trying to trace descendants of all those families, or anyone who might know them, as well as gathering information about life at home during those troubled times.

If you think that you may be able to help the Association in any way, please contact Doug Jones on 01730 231326 or email: doug.pam@btinternet.com

Forthcoming events in this programme of activities include:

  • Saturday 27 September: the annual 'Bygone Buriton' exhibition will have features and findings about the effects of the war on the parish and will be held in St Mary's Church this year whilst repairs continue in the village hall
  • Thursday 30 October: 'The making of War Horse' - special adviser to Stephen Spielberg, Andy Robertshaw will give an insight into the making of a major blockbuster movie as well as unique knowledge about the role of horses in the First World War. Specially arranged for half-term week, this talk will appeal to adults and children of all ages.
