Ramblers enjoy delights of Buriton Nature Reserves

The Petersfield Ramblers group made a special visit to Buriton in June to look at the nature reserves at Coulters Dean and in the Buriton Chalk Pits.

Their circular walk from the village pond revealed the industrial heritage of the old chalk quarries and lime works as well as noting all the improvements made by the Parish Council to open up the area for local families and schoolchildren.

From the top of the site the group walked along the South Downs Way to visit the other jewel in the parish crown: the Coulters Dean Nature Reserve.

Both sites are rich in the rare chalk-loving species that help to make the South Downs internationally famous.

And the ramblers were able to see a range of orchids and other wild flowers before finishing their six-mile stroll back in Buriton.
