As the nation remembered the anniversary of the events of August 1914 and thereafter, the occasion was marked in Buriton with a quiet evening of wartime poems and prose, including some written by local servicemen and residents.
Put together and performed by local villagers, the event included extracts from letters and diaries from a hundred years ago.
'Our Brave Boys of Buriton', a poem published in the Hants & Sussex News in January 1915, was written by Alice Evans (nee Pretty), born and baptised in the parish in January 1863.
The week after publication the newspaper was full of praise for the poem and for the contribution to the war effort that the community of Buriton was making. The poem has also been used this year as the opening piece in the 'Gone but not forgotten' event in Petersfield Square on 20th July.
The event ended with an opportunity for quiet reflection and raised £100 for the Royal British Legion.
