Ringing the changes

Three hundred years ago Buriton church was struck by lightning and partly destroyed by fire. To mark the exact anniversary of the fateful day, Buriton's bell-ringers rang a quarter peal on the morning of Saturday 17 November 2012 and, in the afternoon, gave a public demonstration with opportunities for anyone to have a go at ringing the bells.

About fifty people turned up to learn the ropes, go like the clappers and try to avoid dropping a clanger.

According to Tower Captain David Hughes, most people got the hang of it quite quickly.

The bell ringing team are always looking for a few new recruits as, in David’s words, ‘some of us are fast approaching our sell-by dates.’

Come along and drop a clanger - Saturday November 17th (2 - 4pm)

Exactly 300 years ago the church tower was struck by lightening and destroyed by fire. Buriton's bell-ringers will be marking this anniversary - and they will also be giving people a chance to have a go at ringing the bells.

On the Saturday morning the team will be ringing a quarter peal for everyone to enjoy – and in the afternoon (between 2 and 4pm) there will be a public demonstration with opportunities for anyone to pull the bellropes.

Why not have a go? You might be tempted to join the team again?

Your chance to drop a clanger

300 years ago - on this very day - the steeple on Buriton Church was struck by lightening and burnt down. Our team of bell-ringers will be ringing the bells to mark this anniversary. They will also be giving demonstrations and providing parishioners with an opportunity to have a go.

Turn up between 2pm and 4pm to learn the ropes - or drop a clanger!

Buriton Post Office

The Post Office is open every Friday (1.30 - 3.30pm**) in the Seward Room next to St. Mary's church. You do not have to queue (well, you do very occasionally but even that is enjoyable) and you are treated to a cup of coffee or tea and some healthy gossip.

The Post Office provides a full range of sevices:  posting things, obviously;  car tax;  foreign currency;  etc..  On occasion, local and other produce is available also:  olive oil, tea towels, and pork chops, sausages, etc..  If you have anything you would like to sell, why not give it a try?
