Over sixty people packed into the village hall on a very wet and windy night to be entertained by a witty and informative talk - the autumn meeting of the Buriton Village Association.
Local resident Paul Martin provided an insight into his way of life as an award-winning graphic designer.
As well as being one of Buriton's movers and shakers, Paul is well known locally for all his design work for local groups and organisations including:
- the design and layout of the big Buriton Book of 2012 and, until very recently, of the Parish Magazine and
- logos and branding for local schools, for Neighbourcare Buriton, the church's lighting project, the Buriton Village Association, Tennis Club, Film Shows, the Buriton Heritage Bank, the Chalk Pits Nature Reserve, the local farming initiative and the community's link with Dominase (and more).
He's also done lots of work for many Petersfield-based organisations such as the Youth Theatre, the Edward Barnsley Workshop and the Rugby Club ? The list just goes on and on ?
His fully illustrated talk began with some confessions of practical jokes that he had played whilst employed at the Natural History Museum (please don't eat the elephants) before providing a brief history of branding and some of his favourite results.
To be successful, Paul explained, a brand needs to be unique, memorable and adaptable. In the second half of his talk he described where he gets his inspiration and ideas from - ranging from the work of some other design gurus to poetry and the shapes and lines of crafted guitars.
All in all, Paul provided a unique and memorable evening - interspersed with many examples of his clever wordplay and visual puns.
