VJ Day in Buriton

Anniversary marked quietly but with feeling

As with the anniversary of VE Day in May, it was not possible to arrange any sort of gathering in Buriton to mark the 75th anniversary of VJ Day on 15th August due to Coronavirus restrictions, but the occasion did not get overlooked or go unmarked.

Thanks to Elaine Bray and Karen White, the recently cleaned and restored war memorial was suitably decorated and flanked by eight silent soldiers, each representing one of the men from this parish who lost their lives during the Second World War.

The memorial provided a fitting focus for parishioners and visitors to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many and to say thank you to everyone who was involved with this community.

And the Parish Council Chairman and the Parish Priest marked the occasion, on behalf of the whole community, by delivering short speeches and prayers at the War Memorial whilst suitably socially distanced (details below).
