Management Plan for Nature Reserve takes shape

With the three years of Lottery Funding drawing towards its close, volunteers are putting the finishing touches to their plans to look after the Chalk Pits Nature Reserve over the years ahead.

A small group of volunteers has been learning about the special species which live on the site - and deciding how best to manage each part of the old chalk quarries.

And new species are still being found.  On their latest working party in mid-June a beautiful Butterfly Orchid was discovered alongside one of the main paths - and there are hopes that a Bee Orchid will soon come into flower.

These are both species which have never been found on the site before - demonstrating how the careful management of the Nature Reserve is allowing rare species which love the chalky conditions to re-colonise the area.

The small group of volunteers will be undertaking tasks throughout the winter months - and more helping hands are always welcomed.
