Sunderland Football Club helps Dominase

The Premier League soccer team is the latest organisation to provide help to Buriton's sister community in rural Ghana.

One of Sunderland's star players is Asamoah Gyan - Ghana's Sports Personality of the Year as well as Footballer of the Year.

Because of this connection, Doug Jones (a life-long Sunderland supported himself) has noticed increasing numbers of the club's distinctive red and white striped shirts being worn by football fans living deep inside Ghana's tropical rain forests.

On returning home from one of his recent visits to Dominase, Doug contacted the Football Echo newspaper in Sunderland with photographs and information about the club's new supporters in West Africa.

The Echo published a feature story in August - including details about Buriton's charity link with Dominase.

And, within 24 hours, staff at the Football Club made contact with Doug to offer a full set of sports kit for a football team in Dominase.

The publication of the story in the newspaper has also led to more money being donated for Buriton's innovative 'Buy a Bog' campaign to improve sanitation in Dominase and its out-station villages.
