More great news - about loos

Over 350 children attend the Primary and Secondary Schools in Dompoase - an outlying hamlet of Dominase in rural Ghana. And, until now, they have not had anywhere private to go to the loo. Teenage girls would choose not to go to school for a few days every month; missing out on vital learning.

Now, thanks to Buriton's link, all that can change - and all the children will be able to wash their hands thanks to a big tank which collects rainwater from the roof.

Everyone is very grateful - particularly to Littlejohns Bathrooms of Petersfield who have paid for this project.

And work to help families get their first ever household toilets continues to make good progress too.

More families have now got their first ever toilets - and more are ready to play their part (providing local labour, materials etc) in the months ahead.

Young families, elderly, poor and blind people are all delighted with their toilet houses - which mean that they no longer need to go and squat in the bushes, in fear of snakes, or run the risk of deadly germs being trodden back into their homes and kitchens.

The Village-to-Village Charity now has enough money to provide about a hundred more family toilets and so attention is turning to help children in schools.

As a result of lots of detailed research, the Group is now clear about what is likely to make a real difference 'on the ground'.

In the schools in and around Dominase, supplementary reading books can make a big difference to children's opportunities to learn English at an early age - which opens the door to all subsequent learning of other subjects; and to a route out of poverty.

Miss out on English in their early years of education, and the children miss out on life-chance opportunities thereafter - as generations of villagers have done in the past.

Every £2 that can be raised can provide a new book for a 'School Library' initiative.  There are few books in schools at present, but there is lots of enthusiasm to develop a library facility - even if the library is in a box!
