Buriton's innovative 'Buy a Bog' Christmas fund raising campaign raised over ?600 with contributions from London, Northamptonshire and the Lake District.
The 2011 Christmas campaign was launched at chocolate specialists Cocoa Moon in Bakery Lane, Petersfield on 7th December - with speciality gift shop The Name UK also taking part in a late night shopping evening to help raise money for the cause.
Cocoa Moon proprietor Liz Pillans is backing Buriton's ?Village-to-Village? Charity, explaining that ?Lots of the chocolate that we eat here relies on the work of poor farmers in Ghana.?
?Buriton's 'Buy a Bog' campaign gives us all a chance to help them by making an important improvement to their living conditions.?
Cocoa Moon and The Name UK both donated a proportion of their takings from the evening to the appeal - and lots of local people added their weight to the campaign in the run-up to Christmas by buying an unusual Christmas gift for their friends or relatives: a toilet in Dominase.
The Buy a Bog campaign was launched in 2010 and has raised thousands of pounds to improve household sanitation and save lives in Dominase.
Just £30 can buy the materials for a family toilet in Buriton's sister community in rural Ghana. £50 includes enough money to pay for a mason to help build it.
People 'buying a bog' for Christmas have been giving an African family their own household loo for the first time ? ever!
And every donation helps to save the lives of young children who fall prey to deadly diseases caused by poor sanitation.
