Illegal use of Bolinge Hill Lane

A number of parishioners have complained to the Parish Council about an increase in the number of cars driving along Bolinge Hill Lane (between Petersfield Road, Buriton, and The Causeway).

For some years now this road has been ‘For Access Only’ – which means only for vehicles needing to access the houses or farm along the road.

This lane now forms part of the Shipwrights Way and is used primarily by walkers and cyclists (including children going to or from local schools). Selfish use by unauthorised users is a serious threat to safety.

It is a criminal offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988 s34(1) for anyone to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle (including a motorbike or moped) all the way along the lane from Buriton to Petersfield or vice-versa.

Persons doing so are liable to a fine of up to £1,000 and the vehicle may be seized under s59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 for a repeated offence.

The Police have been alerted to this illegal use and may make unannounced checks from time to time.

If anyone sees any unauthorised use of the lane, they are encouraged to contact the Police (by phoning 101) and reporting the registration numbers.
