Chalk Pits Conservation Morning

Please come and help look after our Local Nature Reserve.

Buriton’s new Chalk Pits Ranger, Ashlea Walters, will be leading a short conservation task mornings from 9.30am to about 1pm on Saturday 16th March.

Please come along to the small quarry pit area (along the path from the old chalk wagon) – even if just for an hour or so. Tea, coffee and cake will be available as usual!

The Chalk Pits has some wonderful flora, which is conserved through practical conservation efforts which would not be possible without local support.

The Nature Reserve benefits greatly every year from the work put in by local volunteers, resulting in a cared-for area which can be enjoyed by all.

The work done in the winter months (including clearing some scrub and undertaking some maintenance of paths) can then be seen through the spring, summer and autumn.

Ashlea explains that “Working from the ground up is key to successful conservation and hence much of our work helps to continue the cycle of flora growth: flora that is a vital part of (and supports) a complicated and beautiful range of wildlife, from slow worms to foxes, bats to bees.”

Ashlea says that “The Chalk Pits Nature Reserve has a wonderfully diverse range of species and provide a beautiful oasis: a testament to nature’s ability to reclaim an area from the hard industry of quarrying and lime-burning to a reserve that punches well above its weight.”

“I hope to see you on Saturday 19th March.”
